Crystal James | Illustrator and Painter

Crystal James is an artist who was classically trained in painting and drawing at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In addition to this, she also graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the University of Denver in 2007. She eagerly began pursuing a career in art and building up herself as an artist. But by the end of 2019, and well into 2021, she suffered a series of personal losses that resulted in her enduring a massive amount of change.  As a reflection of these life trials, her quiet, introspective art has become an embodiment of creating beauty in a dark mindset, and establishing a small bit of order in a world of chaos.

Crystal finds her inspiration through classical art, contemporary writing, and tattooing; which can be seen clearly through her soft technique and ability to make watercolors gracefully exhibit their characteristic bloomy and finicky qualities. Her watercolor pieces have been shown across the United States and Canada, and continue to inspire artists around the world through platforms like Instagram and her website.

Through her tribulations and successes, Crystal has learned some helpful advice that she was able to share with us: “For beginning artists, this is a great time to pursue art. The rise in social media allows you to get your artwork into public view like never before. The hazard is comparing yourself to others, instead, focus on your own individual progress.”
